Daylight Saving and the Beauty of Time

What is time, and is our measure of time an absolute? It's hard to say, considering world-class physicists cannot agree on or fully understand whether time exists or is illusory. Most people are not physicists or horologists, but that does not keep some of us (eh hem, politicians) from attempting to control everything, including time.

Daylight Saving March 14, 2021
In 1784 Ben Franklin thought it a novel idea to introduce the practice of Daylight Saving, or artificially moving time ahead one hour in the early morning during the Summer to reduce candlelight use or now electricity by taking advantage of sunlight. In reality, we never actually lose or gain an hour.

This method of time alteration did not remain consistent from its advent in the 1700s. For example, Germany brought back DST during WWI, followed by all of Europe and the US. Woodrow Wilson annulled DST following WWI due to its lack of popularity with specific groups like farmers. Despite the standard theory that DST helped farmers, it actually hindered their efforts to get crops to market because of the lost morning hour.

For many years The United States waxed and waned and would only commit to performing DST test trials for limited time frames. Then in April, 1966 President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Uniform Time Act into law.

Your Health and Daylight Saving
Chronology is innate. From our circadian rhythm to bodily cycles, we adapt to changes over time. At the moment of conception, we adhere to an intangible path. Approximately nine months later, we are born. Our parents have a strict agenda for our feeding and bathroom needs. Everything that we do revolves around this concept, and we place reminders all around us and on our person in the form of watches and clocks.

Pushing the clocks ahead one hour for the sake of preserving energy can have deleterious effects on our health. Medical researchers have found a direct correlation between the time change and a 6-8% increase in mood issues due to disruptions in sleep schedule, workplace injuries, and health events like heart attacks and stroke for people with preexisting conditions. Losing sleep can lead to added stress on the body, releasing cortisol, the flight or fight hormone.

To ensure good health, do your best to get a good night's sleep, reduce alcohol and caffeine intake, soak up the sun for a bit, and exercise!

The Beauty of Time
Time may sometimes feel like a restraint or invisible straight jacket. We want more of it. More time to spend doing the things and being with the people we that we love. We are bound and must choose how to spend every moment.

We can embrace time in ways we don't always consider. Flip the idea in your mind that time is limited and a force to be reckoned with. Live each moment with appreciation and passion.

Clocks and watches are cherished monuments of time often regarded as family heirlooms. Display your acceptance of time and our yearly rotation around the sun in your home with elegant canvas art wall adornments of timepieces in one or many rooms.

With time comes healing from the past and chances for change. Perhaps we should consider going with the natural flow of time and not meddle.
